Health Care
All Americans should have comprehensive, affordable, quality health care as a fundamental right. The Affordable Care Act, which I voted for in 2010, has been a major step in the right direction. It has expanded health coverage and protected patients, no matter how you get your insurance. However, we have more work to do to reduce costs, including out-of-control prescription drug costs, and to further improve the quality of care.
In Congress, I strongly oppose efforts to repeal or undermine the Affordable Care Act, weaken Medicaid for vulnerable Americans, or endanger Medicare for seniors today and in the future. I strongly support creating a public option in our health care system, efforts to address health disparities, and policies that will address the rise of prescription drug costs. We must also do more to ensure all Americans have access to mental and behavioral health services. To fulfill our goal of a true universal health care system, I have proposed the America’s Right to Health Care Amendment, which would enshrine a fundamental right to health care in our Constitution.

Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04) responded to the Obama administration's decision concerning the requirement for employers to cover contraceptives at no additional cost. Faith-based employers may receive a one-year waiver to come into compliance with the regulation.
Mr. Speaker, I rise to strongly oppose the REINS Act (H.R. 10). This reckless legislation would put American families at risk while doing nothing to create jobs.

Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04) issued the following statement, opposing the Republicans' Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2011 (H.R. 3630). This legislation would lose benefits for 43,000 Minnesotans compared to just extending the current law. H.R. 3630 also reduces over $17 billion in funding for hospitals.
Mr. Speaker, I rise today in strong opposition to H.R. 358 and the on-going Republican war against women's health in America. This bill continues Congressional Republicans' extreme social agenda that jeopardizes women's health care.

As a global community, we must do more to ensure all children and their mothers have access to the support, information, and health care they need to grow-up healthy and strong.
Mr. Speaker, I rise today to mark the special occasion of the centennial celebration of St. John's Hospital. For 100 years, this community hospital has provided quality health care to residents in the Saint Paul – Minneapolis Metropolitan Area.
In 1911, when it first opened its doors in Saint Paul's Dayton's Bluff neighborhood, St. John's German Lutheran Hospital was a 25-bed facility.
Mr. Speaker, as a member of the Interior – Environment Appropriations Subcommittee, I have great respect for Chairman Simpson, Ranking Member Moran and the staffers on both sides of the aisle. On one important aspect of this bill -- Chairman Simpson and Representative Cole have worked together with Democrats to protect critical education and health care investments in Indian Country as part of our trust relationship with the 565 tribes in this country.
