Education

As a former teacher, I understand the importance of ensuring that every child receives a free and excellent education. Good public schools are the foundation of a strong democracy, and we must ensure every student graduates ready for a career or college. Our higher education system must also be accessible and affordable for all students who choose to further their studies.
We must give our teachers and schools the support they need to provide a world-class education for every child in Minnesota and across the United States. This includes robust federal funding to support equal educational opportunities in high-poverty schools and for students with disabilities. We must address the crisis of high college costs by reducing tuition for working families, protecting a strong Pell Grant program, and enforcing protections for student loan borrowers.

Congresswoman McCollum Votes to Help Create Small Business Jobs
After months of Republican obstruction, the U.S. House finally passed the Small Business Jobs Act (H.R. 5297), which enacts eight small business tax cuts to help spur economic recovery and close loopholes that reward corporations for shipping jobs overseas. Congresswoman McCollum supported this legislation to strengthen small businesses. H.R. 5297 passed the House by a vote of 237-187 with only one Republican "yes" vote.

Bunk beds in dorms, yes, but baby cribs? Now that's different, yet it seems there's a crying need for just that kind of accommodation at the Hubert H. Humphrey Job Corps Center in St. Paul.
This Week from Congresswoman Betty McCollum
Madam Speaker, today the House of Representatives is voting on a jobs bill that will keep Americans working. This is a jobs bill that will keep 161,000 teachers in the classroom rather than in the unemployment line. This is a bill that prevents thousands of first-responders who are protecting our communities today from losing their jobs tomorrow. Passing this jobs bill is not a luxury or an act of political patronage as some Republicans claim.

St. Paul, MN - Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04) and local education officials will host a community policy forum on K-12 public education. This event will provide an opportunity for our education leaders to discuss some of the challenges facing Minnesota school districts and provide input on the reauthorization of Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).
Madam Speaker, across our country there are communities, businesses, and families that continue to struggle to escape an economic recession that has caused far reaching hardship and too much pain. Congress has a responsibility to ensure the economic security of the American people, as well as defend the national security of the nation. This appropriations bill does not adequately meet the needs of the American people and I will not vote to pass it.
