St. Mary’s Event Addresses Global Population Issues
At St. Mary’s University, Congresswoman McCollum joined a panel of experts to discuss global population and its effect on foreign affairs. Touching on her recent travel to Bangladesh and Yemen, she discussed how lowering population rates in developing countries can have a positive effect for women and young girls as well as the rest of the country. “Women are organized and focused on making change and making their voices heard,” said Congresswoman McCollum. “Birthrates are falling because girls are being educated and more and more women are gaining access to comprehensive family planning services. Young women are going to college and on the path to leadership in their country. In short, I witnessed women in Bangladesh becoming full members of society.”
Journalist Dennis Dimick from National Geographic and St. Mary’s University professor David Opp also participated in the panel.
