“GOP extremists have succeeded at holding government and the American people hostage”

Washington, DC – Today, on the first day of the Republican shutdown of the federal government, Rep. Betty McCollum (D-MN) issued the following statement:

October 1, 2013 Statements For the Record

Mr. Speaker, the House Republican majority has decided that appeasing radical Tea Party extremists is more important to them than providing necessary funding for the continued operation of the federal government, even on a temporary basis. Passing a common sense continuing resolution would ensure vital government services for millions of American families and business.  These are the basic services provided everyday by federal agencies that keep our communities and country strong.

May 23, 2013 Statements For the Record

Mr. Speaker, I rise today in strong opposition to a bad bill that increases the cost of financing a higher education and adds to the burden of debt for students and their parents.  Without quick Congressional action, the interest rate on subsidized Stafford loans will climb from 3.4% to 6.8% in July for all new loans.  Students and families struggling to afford increasing college costs are relying on us to stop this dramatic increase now, and to work in a bipartisan way to find a long-term solution that will make financing a college education more affordable.
