Minnesota has a strong tradition of family farmers who help provide the nutritious foods that are fundamental to the success of healthy communities. In recent decades, we have also seen the development of urban agriculture in our Twin Cities.
As a member of the Agriculture and Rural Development Appropriations Subcommittee, I'm committed to ensuring agriculture programs are sufficiently funded. I strongly support nutrition assistance programs like the Supplement Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), and farmers' markets programs that increase access to healthy and locally-grown foods. We must ensure that our family farmers have the resources they need and that all Minnesotans are able to provide nutritious foods for their families.

Congresswoman Betty McCollum (DFL-Minn.), member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture-Rural Development-Food and Drug Administration, today joined House Appropriations Democrats in voting to approve the subcommittee's FY 2020 funding bill. The bill provides $24.31 billion to invest in rural community infrastructure, food programs for those in need at home and abroad, medical product innovation and food and drug safety activities, programs that serve farmers and ranchers, agriculture research, and more.

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to pay tribute and honor the career of Doug Peterson, who will retire from his position as President of the Minnesota Farmers Union on December 31, 2016.
Doug has worked dutifully on behalf of the people of Minnesota for more than two decades, serving in the Minnesota State Legislature from 1990 to 2002 before leading the Minnesota Farmers Union from 2002 through 2016. It was my profound honor to serve with Doug in the Minnesota State Legislature for eight years.
