119th Congress

June 14, 2025

SAINT PAUL, Minn. — Congresswoman Betty McCollum issued the following statement on Saturday morning:

“I am beyond devastated by the premeditated murder of Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, and the attempted murder of Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette. This is a shocking and heinous act of targeted political violence against elected officials. It was clearly intended to instill fear in our communities.

Mr. Speaker, I rise in strong opposition to H.R. 4, the Recissions Act of 2025, because this bill undermines and outright destroys long-held, bipartisan American values at home and abroad.

Issues: Appropriations & Budget

This week the Republican Majority in the House of Representatives decided that they know better than the residents of the District of Columbia what their local government needs.

Mr. Speaker, I rise in opposition to S.331, the HALT Fentanyl Act.

This bill is not a solution to the proliferation of Fentanyl Related Substances (FRS) in America. We need legislation and investments in health interventions that will save lives while taking meaningful action to stop illicit drug sales.

Chairman Comer and Ranking Member Lynch,

I want to start by recognizing Governor Walz, my former colleague here in the House, who just successfully negotiated a budget agreement with the tied Minnesota Legislature to avoid a state-level government shutdown. It was a pleasure to work with him when he served here in the U.S. House of Representatives, and I thank him for his leadership as Minnesota’s governor. I am grateful for his stewardship on behalf of all those who call the North Star State home.

WASHINGTON — During today’s House Appropriations subcommittee markup of the 2026 Defense funding bill, House Democrats highlighted how the bill undermines democracy at home and abroad and includes harmful policy riders that divide our nation.

For fiscal year 2026, the bill provides $831.5 billion, which is equal to current funding levels and $1.3 billion above the Administration’s fiscal year 2026 request.

WASHINGTON — House Appropriations Committee Republicans today released their 2026 Defense funding bill, which will be considered by the Defense subcommittee tomorrow. Instead of working with House Democrats to strengthen our national security and prioritize the quality of life for our servicemembers and their families, the bill undermines democracy at home and abroad and includes harmful and divisive policy riders that would hurt military readiness.

SAINT PAUL, Minn. — Congresswoman Betty McCollum, Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, issued the following statement on Sunday in response to President Trump’s decision to activate the California National Guard in defiance of Governor Gavin Newsom:

Mr. Speaker – I voted in support of H.R. 2483, the Substance Use-Disorder Prevention that Promotes Opioid Recovery and Treatment (SUPPORT) Reauthorization Act of 2025. This bill, which was first signed into law in 2018, aims to fight the opioid epidemic in our country by improving access to treatment, increasing recovery opportunities, and strengthening prevention initiatives.  The opioid epidemic has devastated communities and torn apart families across our country, and H.R.
