Crafting a federal budget that fosters economic opportunity, invests in the future, and upholds fiscal responsibility is one of Congress’ most important roles. As a member of the powerful Appropriations Committee, I work every day to bring a common sense, Minnesota perspective to our federal budget.

As the Chair of the Interior-Environment Appropriations Subcommittee, I have prioritized protecting clean air and water, wild lands, and our nation’s natural and cultural legacy for future generations. As Vice Chair of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, I work to ensure that our servicemen and women are the most skilled and best trained and equipped fighting force in the world.

This week, President Obama and Congressional Republicans negotiated a deal on extending the expiring Bush-era tax cuts and unemployment benefits. Unfortunately this agreement means that America's wealthiest individuals not only get an additional tax cut, but they also get a break on the estate tax adding $125 billion to the deficit. The total cost of the Obama compromise plan will add $900 billion to the federal deficit over the next two years.

S.987/H.R.2103 Provides A Strategy to Fight Child Marriage in Developing Countries

Washington, DC - Last night, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed the International Protecting Girls by Preventing Child Marriage Act (S.987/H.R.2103), which was originally introduced by Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04). This legislation calls for the United States government to develop a multiyear strategy to address the prevalence of child marriage in the developing world.

This emergency legislation would have extended unemployment insurance for Americans who are still unable to find employment.
