On July 1, 1966 Medicare officially began serving the United States. Next Friday marks Medicare's 45th birthday. Medicare currently serves over 797,000 Minnesotans. To recognize this milestone, Congresswoman McCollum is inviting you to stop by her St. Paul office next week to sign a birthday card and enjoy a piece of cake.
House Republicans passed a budget in February that would end Medicare as we know it. Now is the time to show support for this critical program that provides comprehensive health insurance to 48 million Americans.
Congresswoman McCollum Supports Congressional Authorization for Military Operations to Protect Libyan Civilians
Today, Congresswoman McCollum issued the following statement regarding the recent House of Representatives' votes on U.S. military operations in Libya.
"Since the beginning of U.S. participation in military operations, I have supported the mission of the international coalition to protect Libyan civilians from atrocities at the hands of Colonel Qaddafi's security forces," said Congresswoman McCollum. "Today, I voted to grant Congressional authorization for the limited U.S. role in the current NATO mission for a defined period of time."
Congresswoman McCollum Commends New Labor Relations Rule Change
On June 22, Congresswoman McCollum responded to the National Labor Relations Board's proposed rule change. The new change to the rule simplifies regulations that governing labor union representation.
"Yesterday, the National Labor Relations Board announced a reasonable rule to restore fairness in the American workplace. This practical fix will streamline and repair the broken system that unnecessarily draws out representation elections for both workers and their employers," said Congresswoman McCollum. "This proposed rule would reduce bureaucratic entanglement, reduce litigation costs, and allow electronic filing of documents to bring the process into the 21st Century. I find it hard to believe that some of my colleagues disagree with this moderate decision and would rather see this agency tied up in red tape."
Congressional Arts Competition Winner Visits Washington, DC
Anna ten Bensel – the winner of the 2011 Congressional Art Competition – visited Washington, DC to receive her award for her piece, "Beginning of a Discovery." She met with Congresswoman McCollum, and she was later honored at the Congressional Arts Competition Awards Ceremony. Anna attends Mount Park Academy.
Congresswoman McCollum Meets Advocates to Discuss a Cure for Mesothelioma
This week, Sue Vento and Heather Von St James met with Congresswoman McCollum to discuss the latest developments on finding a cure for mesothelioma. This disease is a rare form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Sue is the widow of Congressman Bruce Vento – Congresswoman McCollum's mentor and predecessor in Congress. In 2000, Congressman Vento died of mesothelioma
