Speaker Pelosi and Defense Chair McCollum to Attend Munich Security Conference as Russia Threatens Peace in Europe
U.S. delegation to send strong signal of unity with European allies as Russian amasses troops on Ukraine border
Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04), Chair of the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, announced she will join House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and senior House national security leaders to participate in the Munich Security Conference with allies from NATO and non-NATO countries seeking to peacefully resolve Russia's aggressive posture toward Ukraine. Chair McCollum issued the following statement:
"Russia's aggressive posture toward Ukraine is the greatest threat to peace in Europe since World War II," Chair McCollum said. "The Biden administration and Congress will stand united with our European allies in supporting the people of Ukraine with intensive efforts to deescalate tensions. We are fully committed to our NATO allies, so there should be no misinterpretation by Russia regarding America's resolve and support for our allies. The U.S. is prepared to hold Russia accountable for any act of aggression against Ukraine and the administration has a full range of options that does not include U.S. troops in Ukraine. In Munich, my House colleagues and I intend to reassure allies that aggression by Vladimir Putin would be met with a united diplomatic front. America remains committed to the principles of democracy in the face of Putin's authoritarian threat."
