Ranking Member McCollum Response to Republican Majority's Continued Failure to Fund the Government
"For the second week in a row, the Republican majority failed to bring important bills to keep the government open and funded to the House Floor for a vote. They have squandered precious time as the end of the fiscal year approaches, with no backup plan to pass these critical funding bills. This is a catastrophic meltdown that greatly increases the risk of federal government shutdown, and demonstrates that House Republicans are incapable of governing. With their inability to complete this fundamental responsibility of Congress, not only are they failing to meet the most basic needs of the American people, they are also putting our national security at risk. As Ranking Member of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, I was prepared to debate the FY 24 Defense Appropriations bill on the House Floor today, just like I was last week. This sad display from Republicans today leaves us with less time to avert a shutdown. Time and time again, Speaker McCarthy has enabled the extreme wing of his conference, and it’s not working. The only viable solution is a bipartisan one."
