McCollum Votes to Terminate Emergency Declaration

February 26, 2019

Congresswoman Betty McCollum (DFL-Minn.) released the following statement today after voting for the privileged resolution to terminate President Trump's Feb. 15 emergency declaration under the authority provided in the National Emergencies Act (NEA):

"The U.S. Constitution gives Congress the explicit power to appropriate and direct federal spending. President Trump's failure to secure funding for his U.S.-Mexico border wall through the legislative process, despite promising dozens of times, gives this emergency declaration the characteristics of a presidential temper tantrum rather than a serious policy. The onus is now on Republicans in the U.S. Senate to join Democrats in overwhelmingly rejecting this unconstitutional and dangerous attempt to usurp congressional authority. Republicans would be advised to remember this is a constitutional democracy, not a dictatorship."
