Press Release
Transformative Investments Advance Build Back Better Agenda

Congresswoman Betty McCollum (DFL-Minn.) released the following statement today after voting to pass H.R. 5376, the Build Back Better Act:

“The bill House Democrats passed today will create transformative change in the lives of Minnesotans and all Americans. Making health care, child care, education, and housing more accessible and more affordable is essential for Minnesota families and businesses to thrive. I proudly voted for the Build Back Better Act to fix these gaps and make investments that will benefit not just individual families, but our entire nation.

“This bill will help combat the skyrocketing costs of prescription drugs while also expanding access to quality health care. It will finally address the unmet needs of millions of Americans who seek care for a loved one. The pandemic has made it clear: there is a gaping hole in our economic system without support for caregiving. Families should not have to decide between caring for loved ones and maintaining steady employment.

“Finally, addressing the climate crisis is the challenge of our time, and this bill makes the largest investment in history to fight the worst climate impacts, improve community resilience, grow the clean energy economy, and show the next generation we care about making sure they inherit a habitable planet.

“No one making under $400,000 will pay more in taxes, but these investments will be fully paid for – by closing tax loopholes to ensure corporations and the wealthiest Americans finally pay their fair share. It’s time to make the economy work for everyone, and not just those at the very top. As the Build Back Better Act heads to the U.S. Senate for consideration, I urge my colleagues to swiftly pass this bill and join us in investing in America’s future.”

This transformative package will:

  • Lower Health Care Costs: negotiating lower drug costs for seniors; halting Big Pharma’s outrageous price hikes above inflation; and expanding the ACA to make coverage more affordable for those who buy insurance on their own.
  • Lower Child Care & Family Care Costs: expanding the basic promise of free schooling in America for the first time in 100 years with universal preschool for all 3- and 4-year-olds; slashing families’ child care costs; extending the landmark Biden Child Tax Credit; and expanding access to affordable home care for older adults and those with disabilities.
  • The Largest Investment to Combat Climate Crisis in History: cutting pollution, reducing energy costs, creating good paying jobs with a transformational investment to ensure America leads the clean energy economy.

The Build Back Better Act lowers costs and fights inflation because it is fully paid for by making big corporations and the wealthiest pay their fair share. No one making under $400,000 will pay a penny more in taxes.
