McCollum Votes to Deliver Historic Infrastructure Bill for Minnesota
Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04) released the following statement today after voting to pass the Senate amendment to H.R. 3684, the $1.2 trillion Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act (IIJA):
“Today House Democrats passed legislation to advance President Biden’s Build Back Better agenda that invests in our families, our nation, and our future.
“The Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act is a once-in-a-generation investment in our roads, bridges, and communities. It will help us maintain and improve our existing physical infrastructure, which Minnesotans know all too well is long overdue. It includes funding for clean energy innovation, electric vehicle infrastructure, transportation, and critical improvements to water infrastructure that will help protect public health. Today I voted to send this bill to President Biden’s desk to be signed into law.
“Today House Democrats also took a key step to prepare for a vote on the final element of the Build Back Better agenda, the Build Back Better Act, which invests in American families and the human infrastructure they rely on. Our entire nation will benefit from making child care, health care, housing, and education more accessible and affordable. It also makes historic investments to combat the climate crisis for our state, our nation, and our planet. These investments will be fully paid for by closing tax loopholes to ensure the wealthiest Americans and corporations finally pay their fair share.
“The Democratic Build Back Better agenda will create transformative change in the lives of my fellow Minnesotans and all Americans. Rebuilding our physical infrastructure goes hand-in-hand with strengthening health care, child care, education, and climate resilience for Minnesota’s families and businesses. Today we have made history with the investments in the Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act – and we are committed to swiftly delivering on the human infrastructure investments in the Build Back Better Act.”
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill (the Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act, H.R. 3684) has now passed both chambers of Congress and is awaiting President Biden’s signature. It will create good-paying jobs and invest in American workers and communities – rebuilding our infrastructure while helping rebuild the middle class. This package makes the largest federal investment in public transit ever, the largest federal investment in passenger rail since the creation of Amtrak, the single largest dedicated bridge investment since the construction of the interstate highway system, and the largest investment in clean drinking water and waste water infrastructure in American history. It will increase our global competitiveness, and put the U.S. back on track to have world-class infrastructure once again.
In Minnesota, there are 661 bridges and nearly 5,000 miles of highway in poor condition. Minnesotans taking public transportation spend an extra 49.8% of their time commuting. Our state’s drinking water infrastructure will require $7.5 billion in additional funding over the next 20 years. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill delivers on all of these issues and more.
