McCollum Statement on Voting for Continuing Resolution to Avoid Partial Government Shutdown

January 18, 2024

Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04), Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, released the following statement after voting to pass the Continuing Resolution (Senate Amendment to H.R. 2872):

“I voted for the latest Continuing Resolution for a third time this fiscal year to keep the government open and avoid a partial government shutdown,” McCollum said. “Once again, House Democrats provided the votes necessary to avoid harm to our communities and our economy. This extension will provide the time necessary to negotiate the details of the Fiscal Year 2024 spending bills at the levels Speaker Johnson has committed to. Republicans negotiated these same levels with the White House last June, but they immediately went back on their word because MAGA extremists demanded drastic funding cuts and extreme social policy riders. After seven wasted months, enough is enough. Now that we have avoided another short-term disaster, Republicans must stop the chaos and Speaker Johnson must follow through on his promise so we can get to work and provide full-year funding for the priorities of the American people.”
