McCollum Statement on U.S.-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement

December 12, 2019

Congresswoman Betty McCollum (DFL-Minn.) released the following statement today after the United States-Mexico-Canada trade deal was announced:

"After months of negotiations with the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), House Democrats have come to an agreement regarding the United States-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) trade deal. While the initial proposal by the Trump administration fell woefully short of needed provisions to protect workers and consumers, House Democrats negotiated meaningful and transformative safeguards to ensure that the USMCA improves upon both the original NAFTA and the flawed proposal put forth by the Trump administration. The new agreement lays out stronger enforcement mechanisms to ensure that our trading partners are living up to their end of the deal; mandates stronger protections for workers; creates a new, robust system to effectively monitor compliance with the agreement's labor obligations; and includes strong, clear, and enforceable rules to protect the environment. This deal is truly a new standard for U.S. trade agreements, and a win for our economy and American families."
