McCollum Statement on President Trump's Recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s Capital

December 6, 2017
Press Release

Congresswoman Betty McCollum (DFL-Minn.) released the following statement after it was reported that President Donald Trump will recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and begin the process of relocating the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem:

“President Donald Trump’s decision to extend American recognition to Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is an unnecessary and irresponsible act designed solely to appease the most extreme ideologues in Israel and the United States. The President is willfully abdicating the United States’ role as a peacemaker in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, ending any hope of a two-state solution with East Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state.

“President Trump’s decision sabotages relations with the Palestinians, threatens to stoke even more conflict in the Middle East, and further embarrasses the United States in the world.”
