McCollum Statement on President Biden’s FY 2022 Budget Request
Congresswoman Betty McCollum (DFL-Minn.), Chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense (HAC-D) released the following statement after President Biden released his FY 2022 budget request:
“President Biden’s proposed Fiscal Year 2022 budget makes strong investments in critical domestic priorities and essential national security needs that reverse the irresponsible and dangerous priorities of the past four years. President Biden understands that the health, economic, equity, and climate crises facing our country must be addressed with bold government action. As Chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, I view the proposed 1.6% increase for the Department of Defense as an investment in sustaining readiness and modernization efforts across the Services, and also as a mechanism to continue to sustain millions of American jobs vital to our economy.
“In the past months, my subcommittee has held 19 defense and intelligence hearings, both open and classified. We are now ready to dig into this $715 billion Defense request and write a Defense Appropriations bill that addresses threats from adversaries, confronts ongoing cyber-attacks, and leads on tackling climate change. Tough choices will need to be made, which means divesting from ineffective platforms and eliminating wasteful spending are on the table.
“In the coming weeks, I look forward to working with appropriators and all my House colleagues to ensure that essential national security priorities in defense, along with diplomacy and development, are funded to keep our nation and the American people safe, secure, and successful.”
