McCollum Statement on President Biden’s Fiscal Year 2024 Budget Proposal

March 9, 2023

Congresswoman Betty McCollum (DFL-Minn.) released the following statement today after President Biden released his budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2024:

"Today President Biden released his Fiscal Year 2024 budget proposal, which builds on the progress Democrats have made for the American people in Fiscal Year 2022 and 2023. Working together with the White House, we have increased investments in American families by lowering prescription drug costs, creating more good-paying jobs, and investing in our infrastructure.

"Now we need to see Speaker McCarthy's FY 2024 budget proposal in order to start the Appropriations process. Some Republicans have stated they are willing to make devastating cuts to Social Security and Medicare, which millions of Americans rely on to live lives of dignity. They've also stated they are willing to hold our economy hostage with a debt ceiling vote in order to put these programs on the chopping block. Social Security and Medicare are critical economic programs that must be fully funded, along with the health, education, and safety needs of our communities. Democrats will put people over politics.

"As the Ranking Democrat on the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, it is my job to review President Biden's Defense request. I will continue to ensure our U.S. service members have the resources they need to complete their missions safely and return home. This budget must address our national security needs, including defending democracy amid Russia's continued war on Ukraine and confronting the global climate crisis—and above all, ensuring America remains safe, secure, and strong into the future."
