McCollum Statement on Passage of the Right to Contraception Act

July 21, 2022

Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04) released the following statement today after voting for the Right to Contraception Act (H.R. 8373), which passed the House on a 228-195 vote:

"Every woman and couple must have the right to access contraception. It is a basic health care right! But following this extremist Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and the opinion from Justice Thomas challenging our basic privacy rights, Republican legislators across the country are already proposing restrictions to birth control. These proposals are a continuation of decades of extreme GOP efforts to roll back the clock on reproductive rights at the state and federal level—to control women's lives and futures by controlling our bodies.

"House Democrats are urgently working to protect access to contraception and the right for people to make decisions about their own families and their lives. That's why I voted today for the Right to Contraception Act (H.R. 8373), to ensure neither states nor a future Republican administration can limit access to contraceptives or limit their prescription. Access to contraception advances women's health, economic empowerment, and equality. We won't give up that progress. We won't back down."
