Press Release
Relief will cover financial shortfall after extended National Guard mission protecting the U.S. Capitol

Congresswoman Betty McCollum (DFL-Minn.) released the following statement after voting to pass H.R. 3237, the Emergency Security Supplemental to Respond to January 6th Appropriations Act:

“On January 6, the National Guard was mobilized to protect the U.S. Capitol and defend our democracy from a violent insurrection,” McCollum said. “The Guard’s mission lasted for five months – paid for by pulling forward funding that was scheduled to be spent in August and September. Though it took the Senate an additional two months to act, I am pleased that we have now passed a bill to provide the financial relief we owe the National Guard, that now heads to the president’s desk for signature.

“Additionally, the supplemental provides funds for the Department of Defense and the Department of State to ensure the safety of translators and other Afghans and their families who provided vital assistance to the U.S. over the last 20 years. We have an obligation to these brave men and women, and this is the first step in a process to begin relocating our allies as our military departs the country.

“To the members of the U.S. Capitol Police, National Guard, and all those who responded to the attack on January 6: Thank you. Your bravery will not be forgotten.”
