McCollum Statement on One-Year Anniversary of Illegal Invasion of Ukraine

February 24, 2023

Congresswoman Betty McCollum (DFL-Minn.) released the following statement on the one-year anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine:

"One year on, Vladimir Putin's illegal invasion of Ukraine has resulted in needless tragedy, loss of life, and countless war crimes," McCollum said. "Since the invasion, the world's democracies joined together in an unprecedented united front to defend the principles of freedom over authoritarianism, of self-determination over annexation, and human rights over the killing of innocents."

"As Chair of the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee in the 117th Congress, I worked with the Biden administration to invest in timely national security assistance for the government of Ukraine. Together, Congress and the Administration have ensured that the Ukrainians continue to receive the assistance necessary to defend their home from Russian aggression. I also want to commend President Biden for his work to strengthen the NATO alliance and for his trip to Kyiv this week. Standing united with President Zelenskyy, President Biden has made clear where the United States stands: In defense of freedom and democracy – today, tomorrow, and forever. Vladimir Putin's authoritarianism will not win. Our allies remain united, and Ukraine will prevail. My heart goes out to the Ukrainian people, who have lost loved ones, who have had to flee their homes, and who are living each day with uncertainty. We stand with you. Slava Ukraini."
