McCollum Statement in Observance of Memorial Day

May 27, 2022

Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04) released the following statement ahead of Monday's observance of Memorial Day:

"On the last Monday in May, we reflect on the sacrifices of the fallen heroes who lost their lives defending our nation at home and abroad. As we gather in our communities all across America to pay tribute to our fallen service members, I invite all Minnesotans to join me in taking a moment to reflect on the price of freedom and offer our thanks to all those who gave the last true measure of devotion in service to our nation. We owe a debt of gratitude for the bravery and courage of the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Coast Guardsmen, and Guardians – and their families – who have sacrificed in the name of protecting our ideals. Today and every day, let's resolve to do our part to uphold the values upon which our nation was founded – so that the sacrifice of our fallen heroes will not have been made in vain."

A note from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA): All VA national cemeteries will be open Memorial Day weekend from dawn to dusk for the first time since 2019. A commemoration ceremony open to the public will take place on May 30 at 10am CT at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. VA encourages all Americans to honor a fallen service member by leaving a tribute on the Veterans Legacy Memorial site.
