McCollum Statement on Labor Day
Congresswoman Betty McCollum (DFL-Minn.) issued the following statement today ahead of Labor Day:
“On Labor Day, we honor working families who sacrifice each day to keep our nation strong and prosperous. It’s also a time to recognize the success of America’s Labor movement which has fought for the bedrock values we take for granted: the minimum wage, the 40-hour work week, and health and safety measures that protect workers on the job. These milestones provide the very foundation of the American Dream, and were achieved through long and tireless organizing and collective bargaining efforts. Sadly, that dream is under attack from a global pandemic and the failure of the White House and Senate Republicans to protect the health, safety, and economic security of American workers.
“More than 100 days ago, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Heroes Act to help save American lives and livelihoods. The Senate refuses to take up this essential legislation that provides critical support for our front line workers and protects them from devastating layoffs and service cuts.
“At this time of COVID-19, we must all join to together to say to the brave men and women on the front lines of this crisis: ‘We have your back.’ This means passing the Heroes Act and providing the support and protection that our health care workforce and essential workers need and deserve – from first responders, to grocery store workers providing us food, to the postal workers who deliver mail, prescriptions, ballots, and more to Americans across the nation.
“To the educators, working parents, the underemployed, those facing discrimination in the workplace, and those who want to be working but cannot because of the pandemic, you have my commitment that I will keep fighting to confront this virus and the structural economic inequities faced by so many in America. We must restore the promise of opportunity for all our families, and I stand united with you in this fight.”
