McCollum Statement on International Women’s Day, Women’s History Month

March 8, 2023

Congresswoman Betty McCollum (DFL-Minn.) released the following statement today in recognition of International Women's Day and Women's History Month:

"On International Women's Day, amid Women's History Month, let's take a moment to honor the advancements of women and girls, their achievements and contributions in creating the world we live in, and recommit to ending gender discrimination. As a Member of Congress, I'm committed to making investments that support women in the Fourth District, across our state and nation, and around the world. My Democratic Appropriations colleagues and I, along with President Biden, have increased federal funding for education, child care, health care, resources for domestic violence survivors, good-paying jobs, workplace safety, and much more. As former Chair and current Ranking Member of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, I honor the women who play a critical role in keeping our country safe—because when we support women in uniform, we invest in America's national security.

"As we celebrate the progress made in our march toward equality, we also recommit to the work that remains to establish a future where women and girls can thrive and their human rights are affirmed and respected. With Roe v. Wade overturned by the Trump Supreme Court, we must fight back harder than ever against attacks on reproductive health and abortion access.

"We celebrate history being made, with Speaker Pelosi's tenure recently coming to a close. It has been a privilege to serve under the first woman Speaker of the House. Her commitment to human rights and fighting for children has been a huge inspiration, and she will be recognized as the most productive speaker in modern American history. I'm thankful also for the women's rights activists, authors, and leaders who have pushed forward progress in advancing suffrage, workforce inclusion, and ensuring women's voices are present and heard everywhere decisions are being made."
