McCollum Statement on End of War in Afghanistan

August 30, 2021

Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04) released the following statement today after the last U.S. military flight left Kabul, Afghanistan, bringing an end to America's longest war:

"It is August 31 in Afghanistan, and the war has now ended. Today, let us thank our U.S. military and diplomats for all those they were able to evacuate – American citizens and those who stood alongside our soldiers during this 20-year war, as well as our allies.

"The hard work continues for the Department of State to bring out the remaining American citizens, those who've helped our government, and Afghans who worked with NGOs and are now fearing for their lives. Homeland Security also has a large task ahead as they finish the processing for the thousands of refugees who have fled Afghanistan.

"Once again, we must remember and keep in our hearts all those who served so valiantly in Afghanistan. Thank you for your service and sacrifice."
