McCollum Statement on Election of President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice-President Elect Kamala Harris

November 7, 2020
Press Release

Congresswoman Betty McCollum (DFL-Minn.) issued the following statement today after the 2020 Presidential Election was called for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris:

“It has been declared that President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice-President-Elect Kamala Harris have been elected to lead the United States forward with the consent of nearly 75 million Americans – a record setting vote total. The yearning for mature, decent, and thoughtful leadership in the White House and across the federal government was on the ballot as our nation confronts an unprecedented public health and economic crisis. The fate of American democracy was also at stake in this election. President-Elect Biden has given us all every assurance in his words and with his lifetime of committed service to our country that he will defend our democratic values and strengthen them at home and around the world.

“The challenges facing our country are enormous and daunting. It will take unity and common purpose to defeat the coronavirus, rebuild the economy, ensure racial justice, and avert a global climate crisis. I am hopeful that the coming months and years will allow us to meet the urgent immediate needs of the American people while fixing our focus on investing in a more just and equitable future for all.

“But I am also cautious. During the past decade, and particularly during the last four years, division, disinformation, and indecency have been used as political weapons to empower Donald Trump with the full embrace of the Republican Party. These deep and destructive divisions can be healed only if Republican leaders decide to work with President-Elect Biden and Democrats in a spirit of unity and common purpose. There is no doubt that Mr. Biden will reach his hand across the aisle to find solutions to our nation’s challenges. The burden will be on Republicans to put the needs of the nation ahead of the demagogic, anti-democratic division fomented by Donald Trump.

“Today, I am celebrating. But tomorrow we must get back to work and prepare for January 20, 2021 and beyond when President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice-President Elect Kamala Harris will lead our nation forward with dignity, decency, and determination.”
