McCollum Statement on Earth Day 2022

April 22, 2022

New video from Hamline University Center for Global Environmental Education outlines importance of McCollum bill to restore Mississippi River

Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04) released this statement today in celebration of Earth Day:

"On this 52nd Earth Day, we take time to reflect on the stewardship of this precious planet we call home," Rep. McCollum said. "It is an opportunity to celebrate our natural treasures and renew our commitment to protecting the Earth for future generations. In Congress, I use my role as a member of the Appropriations Committee to make federal investments in our environment – keeping our air safe to breathe and our water safe to drink; ensuring our public lands and resources are well managed and accessible; funding research and cleanup efforts so our service members have safe housing, and more.

"As climate change continues to impact our communities, we need to care for our natural resources, and especially our clean water. The Mississippi River is a source of drinking water for millions; it is an important flyway for migratory birds, and it is a source of jobs and economic development from the northern Minnesota headwaters to the Gulf of Mexico. It is also #6 on the 2022 list of America's Most Endangered Rivers. That's why I've introduced the Mississippi River Restoration and Resilience Initiative Act (MRRRI), legislation to provide federal funding opportunities to restore and revitalize the river. I'm pleased to have worked with the folks at Hamline University's Center for Global Environmental Education on this video explaining the need for a coordinated approach up and down the Mississippi's corridor. Working together, we can restore and protect the river's vitality, and Keep it Mighty for generations to come."
