McCollum Statement on Earth Day 2018
Congresswoman Betty McCollum (DFL-Minn.), Ranking Member of the House Interior-Environment Appropriations Subcommittee, released the following statement on Earth Day, which will be celebrated on Sunday:
"Earth Day is a time to reflect on our stewardship of the air we breathe, the water we drink, and this precious planet we all call home. It calls us to celebrate our natural treasures and renew our commitment to protecting the Earth for future generations.
"Once upon a time, Republicans and Democrats came together to establish the Environmental Protection Agency and tackle the real issue of climate change. Sadly, the Trump White House and Congressional Republicans have turned their backs on that commitment.
"We have come too far to turn back now to the bad old days of noxious smog in our major cities, rivers so polluted that they catch fire, and toxic waste sites that spread cancer in our communities. Today, we recommit ourselves to fighting for clean air, clean water, protected public lands, and action on climate change. Our Earth hangs in the balance. It is up to us to act to protect our planet for ourselves and for future generations."
