McCollum Statement on Devastating April Jobs Report
Congresswoman Betty McCollum (DFL-Minn.), released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its monthly jobs report:
“Every family, community, and economic sector in our society is under profound strain right now because of COVID-19. The reality that more than 20 million Americans lost their jobs in a single month is a devastating blow to our economy and the millions of families living paycheck to paycheck. We must wage a two-front war on COVID-19: a science-based health response to minimize deaths, treat the ill, and develop treatments and a vaccine to protect lives; and, an economic battle to re-build the economy while protecting families, businesses, non-profits, and local, state, and tribal governments from economic collapse. In order to re-open businesses and put people back to work, we must attack the virus and reduce infections with a whole of government strategy that is rooted in science, not wishful thinking, snake-oil solutions, or dishonest campaign promises.
“Democrats in Congress are standing with the American people, our health care workers, and all workers at this time of crisis. We want every worker on the job, but with all the protections necessary to do their jobs safely. Today’s report is a profound reminder that it is past time for Republicans to end their giveaways to CEOs and corporations, and instead stand with Democrats in advancing comprehensive, coordinated, and immediate legislation to sustain families, local governments, small businesses, and nonprofits through this unprecedented time.
“Around the country, it is governors – both Democrats and Republicans – who have been forced to demonstrate extraordinary leadership. Our governor, Tim Walz, certainly is an example. But at this time of crisis, why is there no national strategy to protect the American people, economy, or our future? Why is there no American leadership on the world stage to coordinate a treatment and vaccine development of a global pandemic? Instead, we have a self-absorbed, deranged president leading a corrupt administration that is sacrificing lives and livelihoods in an attempt to preserve their re-election chances. And every day, the Trump administration’s failures are making America weaker and more vulnerable.
“The time for Congress to stand united and act is now. Senate Majority Leader McConnell and the Republican Senate have a responsibility to stop playing politics with the fear and uncertainty people are facing, and join Democrats in charting a path forward for the good of our public health, our economy, and the tens of millions of Americans who want to get back to work.”
