McCollum Statement on Democrats’ Action to Address Formula Shortage

May 18, 2022

Passage of H.R. 7790 and Use of Defense Production Act will increase the supply of infant formula

Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04), Chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense (HAC-D), issued the following statement after voting for the Infant Formula Supplemental Appropriations Act and President Biden announced he will invoke the Defense Production Act to address the infant formula shortage:

"Tonight, the House took decisive action to pass an emergency supplemental aid package to address the alarming national shortage of infant formula," Rep. McCollum said. "The Senate must immediately take up this bill and send it to the president's desk for signature. As Chair of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, I support President Biden's invocation of the Defense Production Act to ramp up domestic production of infant formula, and launching Operation Fly Formula to use federal planes to fly formula in from abroad. With formula arriving from abroad, the $28 million for the FDA that House Democrats passed tonight will ensure the agency has sufficient resources to make sure imported formula is safe. While nearly 200 Republicans callously voted against this critical aid, the Biden administration and Democrats are doing everything we can to ensure formula gets to babies who need it as soon as possible."
