McCollum Statement on the 21st Anniversary of 9/11

September 9, 2022

Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04) released the following statement today ahead of Sunday's 21st anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks:

"On the 21st anniversary of 9/11, we remember the tragedy and pain our nation felt on that day, and remember the victims of the attacks and their families, colleagues, and friends. They will forever be in our minds and hearts. The thousands of victims' lives were taken in a moment—but after more than two decades, their loved ones still feel the pain of their loss. Today, we once again mourn with the families and remember the courage of the first responders who risked their lives to save others.

"As we continue to stand in defense of fellow democracies around the world, we must also stay vigilant to the threats facing our nation, both foreign and domestic. Today it is especially important that we pause and reflect on how our nation came together after the attack and recommitted to our shared principles of freedom, justice, and equality for all. Together let us look to the future with resolve that we will once again embody the lessons that unified us in those fateful days, weeks, and months following 9/11, and stand together to defend our values. That's what makes us Americans: We will defend against those who would seek to extinguish our ideals.

"Once again, we extend our most profound gratitude to the U.S. service members and first responders who have sacrificed so much to keep the American people and our nation safe. May we never forget."
