McCollum: Congress Must Act to Create a Pathway to Citizenship for All Immigrants
Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04) released the following statement today after the U.S. Senate parliamentarian announced a path to citizenship cannot be included in the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation package:
“The Senate Parliamentarian has issued a ruling stating that Democrats cannot include immigration reform provisions in the proposed budget reconciliation package. This decision is extremely disappointing. My office constantly works on immigration casework and I regularly hear from constituents, business leaders, and others who strongly support advancing comprehensive immigration reform. I am ready to vote today to pass immigration legislation that will meet the needs of immigrants, their families, and our economy. Congress needs to act to create a pathway to citizenship that keeps immigrant families and communities strong, safe, and contributing to our society.
“The reality is that Republicans in Congress would rather run political attack ads targeting immigrants than work with Democrats to pass immigration reform. Republicans across the country remain entrenched in their opposition to immigration reform and outright rejection of immigrants. The critical contributions immigrants make to our economy and society are denied by Republicans. With millions of jobs unfilled in all sectors of our economy, immigration reform is part of the solution that is consistently blocked by xenophobic Trump Republicans.
“Once again, the Senate filibuster is creating an artificial obstacle to addressing an urgent policy matter overwhelmingly supported by the American people. I urge business leaders, non-profits, and immigrant communities to hold Republicans accountable on this urgent matter. The time for action is now.”
