McCollum Congratulates Rep. David Scott on Agriculture Committee Chairmanship
Congresswoman Betty McCollum (DFL-Minn.) issued the following statement today after Rep. David Scott was affirmed as the next Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee:
“I want to congratulate Congressman David Scott (D-GA) on his election by the Democratic Caucus as Chair of the House Agriculture Committee for the 117th Congress. I was honored to speak in support of Congressman Scott during the Democratic House Steering and Policy Committee earlier this week. Mr. Scott grew up living and working on his grandparents’ farm, and represents a diverse district that includes suburban and rural areas southwest of Atlanta, and part of Atlanta itself. Because of his 18 years on the Agriculture Committee, Congressman Scott has a deep understanding and knowledge of the issues facing our farmers and families experiencing food insecurity today.
“Congressman Scott’s Chairmanship is historic, as the first African American to lead the committee. Farmers, students, and workers of color are historically underrepresented in the agriculture industry, and his committee work on providing meaningful scholarship and advancement opportunities for these communities is critical to ensuring equity and a skilled and diverse workforce in the future.
“Having worked with and earned the endorsement of former Chairman Collin Peterson – a longtime champion of Minnesota agriculture – I’m confident Congressman Scott will work to ensure that Minnesota’s diverse interests and needs are met. I look forward to working with Congressman Scott in the years ahead on critical nutrition programs, bridging the urban-rural agricultural divide, addressing climate change, and more.”
