McCollum and 35 Representatives Call on Corporation for National and Community Service to Immediately Suspend the Closing of 46 State and Territorial Offices

Press Release

Congresswoman Betty McCollum (DFL-Minn.) and 35 Congressional colleagues are calling on the CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), Barbara Stewart, to immediately suspend the closing of 46 state and territorial offices. Minnesota’s office is scheduled to close May 1, while some state offices have already closed. CNCS state and territorial offices administer AmeriCorps VISTA and National Senior Service Corps, including the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, the Foster Grandparent Program, and the Senior Companion Program.

Congresswoman McCollum released the following statement:

“State and territorial CNCS offices do critical work and are immersed within the communities they serve,” McCollum said. “The staff in these offices understand how their programs can best fill the gaps and fulfill their missions to make the most impact. Since CNCS was formed, its volunteers have served countless communities and directly improved thousands of lives across the country. The Trump administration proposed eliminating CNCS in two successive budgets, but this was broadly rejected with bipartisan congressional support. However, closing all 46 state and territorial offices serves as a workaround to Congress – and only compromises the CNCS mission to improve lives and strengthen communities.

“Rather than executing a plan that has been hastily advanced and lacks transparency, CNCS needs to work directly with Congress and stakeholders to strengthen the future of national service, which every Member of Congress signed on to this letter strongly supports.”

The letter was signed by Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.), Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH), Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.), Rep. Angie Craig (DFL-Minn.), Rep. John B. Larson (D-Conn.), Rep. Denny Heck (D-Wash.), Rep. Jerry McNerney (D-Calif.), Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.), Rep. Paul Tonko (D-N.Y.), Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME), Rep.
