Congresswoman McCollum Statement on President Trump's Address to the Joint Session of Congress

March 5, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04), Dean of the Minnesota Congressional Delegation, released the following statement in response to President Trump’s address to the joint session of Congress:

“As a candidate, Donald Trump promised he’d lower costs on ‘Day One.’ As President, Trump has done nothing to reduce prices, but on his watch, families are now paying more for the basics – food, energy, and insurance.”

“Last night, President Trump spent 99 minutes bragging, blustering, and bullying, but just two minutes on the rising costs facing Americans—only to blame others for higher prices. Prices he is driving even higher by his tariffs, economic policies, and fiscal mismanagement. Trump was silent about the impact on families that will be caused by the budget passed by House Republicans, with his blessing. He also promised to protect Medicare and Medicaid, yet the Republican budget mandates hundreds of billions of dollars in cuts to vital health care programs, as well as cuts in food benefits to families that rely on SNAP – while handing out massive tax cuts for their billionaire donors like Elon Musk.”
