Congresswoman Betty McCollum Statement on Passing of President Jimmy Carter
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04) released the following statement on Sunday evening after the Carter Center announced the death of former President Jimmy Carter at the age of 100:
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of President Carter. His love of America and all of humanity was apparent throughout his lifelong public service as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, as Governor of Georgia, and as President of the United States.
“It’s a testament to his character that he dedicated his post-presidency to directly helping others — from villagers in Africa to an East Side Saint Paul couple who needed help repainting and caulking their windows. It was an honor to join him in 2010 to help rebuild and revitalize Saint Paul homes during a Habitat for Humanity build. I’m grateful to have experienced President Carter’s compassion and commitment up close and I will treasure these memories as I continue to work to expand affordable housing for all Americans in Congress.
“President Carter lived his values by seeking harmony with nature and humankind — leadership that has inspired my own work to improve child and maternal health around the world. I’m grateful for his leadership, kindness, and decency which brought light to the world and good to America.
“A public servant until the very end of his days, President Jimmy Carter leaves a positive imprint on the fabric of American history. May we all aspire to be more like him. I send my deepest condolences to President Carter’s children, grandchildren, and loved ones, and join all Americans as we mourn the loss of our 39th president.”
