House approves essential $40 billion bill to provide assistance to Ukraine amid Russia’s continued offensive

Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04), Chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense (HAC-D), released the following statement today after the introduction of legislation to provide additional U.S. assistance to Ukraine:

"As Chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, I know how critical it is to continue our commitment to provide Ukraine with robust security assistance as they defend their country against Russia's military offensive and war crimes," Chair McCollum said. "This bill is essential to continue funding for equipment, weapons, and training for the Ukrainian military within the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. It will also replenish stocks of U.S. military equipment that were donated to Ukraine. Importantly, this package includes oversight measures to ensure accountability and transparency for the use of these funds.

"Last month, I was in Germany and Poland to visit with our deployed service members. We've included flexibility for the Department of Defense to provide hardship pay for those troops deployed to European nations. Desperately needed humanitarian relief for Ukrainian families who have been displaced within Ukraine or have fled to neighboring nations is also funded in this bill. I stand united with President Biden and my colleagues in Congress to meet this moment and support the Ukrainian people who are protecting their land and all of Europe from Putin's aggression. We have passed this bill to let our fellow democracies and the people of Ukraine know we stand with them in this fight."
