Chair McCollum Calls for Russia to be Designated a State Sponsor of Terrorism

August 1, 2022

Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04), Chair of the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, issued the following statement today:

"For more than five months, Vladimir Putin and the Russian Armed Forces have waged an unprovoked, illegal, and brutal campaign against the people of Ukraine," Chair McCollum said. "Russia's reprehensible conduct has caused mass destruction of infrastructure, crippled their economy, and resulted in the indiscriminate killing of thousands of Ukrainian civilians. We must call out this violence and murder for what it is: terrorism committed by the Russian state. I strongly urge the Biden administration to formally designate the Russian Federation as a state sponsor of terrorism, and impose the strongest possible sanctions under U.S. law. The United States must continue to support and stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people in their courageous fight for freedom in the face of Russian aggression and terror."
