Defense & National Security
Ensuring national security is one of the primary Constitutional responsibilities of Congress. In the 21st Century, America needs a flexible military that is able to confront emerging threats, such as terrorism, growing regional instability, the spread of nuclear weapons, and the emergence of cyber warfare.
As the Vice Chair of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, I support smart and strategic investments in our national defense that ensure our servicemen and women are the most skilled and the best trained and equipped fighting force in the world. I am also focused on improving military health care, ending military sexual assault, and supporting international military-to-military cooperation to prevent conflicts.

Congresswoman McCollum to Serve on Interior-Environment and Military Construction-Veterans Affairs Subcommittees
Washington, DC - Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04) issued the following statement on her appointment to two House Appropriations Subcommittees for the 112th Congress.
Mr. Speaker, this House and the entire Nation extend our support, love, and best wishes to our colleague, Representative Gabby Giffords, and all those wounded in Saturday's shooting. We also mourn the deaths -the tragic and senseless deaths - of six Americans who were engaged in participating in street corner democracy with their Congresswoman.
My Minnesota constituents feel the pain and loss inflicted by a few seconds of gun violence. One of my St. Paul constituents visited my office on Monday and wrote a note to Congresswoman Giffords.
Congresswoman McCollum Rejects Tax Cut Compromise
Madam Speaker, I rise today in strong support of H.R. 2965, the Don't Ask Don't Tell Repeal Act of 2010. This will be the second time this year that the House votes to repeal the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, and I urge my colleagues to support it.
Congresswoman McCollum Votes Protect American Jobs
Congresswoman McCollum and Democrats were joined by 99 Republicans in passing the Currency Reform for Fair Trade Act (H.R. 2378), which helps prevent unfair trade practices that hurt U.S. exports and push American jobs overseas. Certain countries, such as China, suppress the value of their currencies to make exports cheaper on the international market. This currency manipulation makes U.S. exports less competitive, hurts U.S. manufacturers, and slows the economic recovery.
Madam Speaker, I rise today in support of H. Res 1251, which recognizes and honors the United States troops who fought and died on D-day at the Battle of Normandy.
Congresswoman McCollum Speaks Before the Midway Chamber of Commerce
Nine years ago on September 11th, I was at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC, only a short distance from the Pentagon, when the attack occurred. As Members and staff fled the Capitol grounds, not knowing if an attack on Congress was imminent, I remember seeing the smoke rising from the Pentagon in an otherwise clear blue sky.
This Week from Congresswoman Betty McCollum
Madam Speaker, I rise today to recognize America's Korean War Veterans and their service to the United States on the 60th anniversary of the Korean War.
