McCollum Statement on the 20th Anniversary of Senator Paul Wellstone’s Passing

October 25, 2022

Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04) released the following statement today on the 20th anniversary of the death of U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone:

"On a gray, rainy day in October 2002, Minnesota suffered the heartbreaking loss of Senator Paul Wellstone, his wife Sheila, daughter Marcia, aides Tom and Will, and my dear friend Mary McEvoy in a tragic accident that remains one of the saddest moments in our state's history. After 20 years, Senator Wellstone's legacy endures: His passion, courage, and visionary leadership inspires many to do the work that justice requires. I will always remember his enthusiasm for the work he did and the way that he welcomed everyone to join him. It was such a privilege to know and work with Paul and Sheila. Today and every day, let's recommit to keep working for the world they envisioned: one in which all people's rights are respected, where workers are treated fairly, the environment is protected, and all people have access to health care and opportunities to thrive. Paul said it best: ‘we all do better when we all do better.' Let's remember to stand up, keep fighting for a better future for all."
