Congresswoman McCollum: Republicans in Congress are Abdicating their Oversight Responsibility
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04) released the following statement on Thursday:
“Since Day One of his presidency, Trump has brazenly defied the laws and Constitution of the United States to ram through his radical MAGA agenda. This week, we learned he illegally allowed an unelected billionaire and his interns to fire career public servants and seize access to every American’s Social Security number, financial data, and personal health information, not to mention sensitive national security information. He’s issued executive orders that break the law by stopping investments for our community that were passed by law. He’s raising the price of groceries and gas through reckless tariff threats. He’s weakening our national and economic security by illegally closing federal agencies and targeting federal law enforcement officials. He’s proposing to deploy thousands of American men and women to ‘take over’ and ‘own’ Gaza.
“Republicans have complete control of the Legislative Branch, yet majority House and Senate Republicans are failing to take any action, or even signal concern over the shocking, illegal actions being taken by the Trump administration. The U.S. Congress is a co-equal branch of government and has a duty and responsibility to uphold the Constitution and hold the President, the White House, and the entire executive branch accountable for this reckless criminal behavior. By doing nothing, Republicans are surrendering America’s greatness and weakening our nation every day.
“As a Member of Congress, I swear an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic. My fellow Democrats and I are speaking out firmly and clearly to defend Americans. We need Republicans to join us.”
