WASHINGTON, D.C. — The House Appropriations Committee passed the Fiscal Year 2027 National Security & Department of State funding bill on Tuesday by a vote of 35-27. Congresswoman Betty McCollum (D), the Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, voted no on the bill and spoke against what she called a “retreat from American diplomacy” during the committee hearing.

“President Trump’s war in Iran is a strategic and diplomatic failure. His actions have made the Middle East more unstable. Thousands of civilians throughout the region are dying. And yet, President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu show no signs of stopping.

Statements For the Record

Mr. Speaker, I rise to restate my strong opposition to President Trump’s unlawful and unconstitutional decision to order U.S. military strikes on Iran on February 28. His actions have entered our nation into war without any imminent threat posed by Iran to the United States and lacking necessary Congressional authorization.
